Combating Weaponizing Migration

UNODC | GA

Migrant smuggling is one of the largest-scale criminal enterprises in modern-day society. Thousands of smugglers take advantage of the millions of migrants seeking to escape conditions in their home countries. These smugglers charge enormous sums for their services and force migrants into squalid conditions on dangerous routes, resulting in an extremely high death toll. Additionally, these migrants have no way of knowing where they will be going, except for the word of the smuggler, allowing them to be used for political agendas and stirring international issues. An example of this is in Lithuania, which alleges that Belarus is engaged in smuggling migrants across their shared border to destabilize the country and reduce their sovereignty. In this situation, migrants have not only been taken advantage of and put in danger, but also have been used to create geopolitical conflict and further political agendas.

In this committee, delegates will be tasked with researching and understanding other ways in which migrants have been weaponized around the world, aiming to understand the underground system that fuels the trafficking. Forging diplomatic connections and working together against these issues is vitally important for the safety and the rights of millions of migrants.
