Maritime Power: The Struggle for Power in the Indian Ocean
Cabinet of the U.S. | 3-Way Crisis
While seemingly an ocean away, the United States has maintained a consistent presence inside the Indian Ocean to help protect free trade and strategic interests for decades. While it is of extreme importance for the US to keep a military presence in the region - its main origin being the military base on Diego Garcia Island in the region - the partnership with India is seemingly a large target for the State, with the fruits of this relationship resulting in a potential counterbalance to any encroaching influence from China in the East. India’s switch to strategic posturing has put India and China’s relationship in more contention than it ever has been.
As the committee progresses, delegates will be tasked with facing a myriad of economic, political, and unexpected crises, while continuing to develop positioning for the United States in the region. How the relationship with India, international competition with China, and the US' role in the Indo-Pacific region will look like in the future is up to them.
