Refugee issues in the Mediterranean

UNHCR | GA

Thousands of migrants flee their home countries seeking better opportunities in other countries, where they can work, provide for their families, and escape any war, famine, poverty, or persecution they may be facing at home. These migrants often must take treacherous paths, putting their lives at risk with no choice but to lay it all on the line for the chance at a better life. Europe, both the mainland and the United Kingdom, is one of the key targets for these migrants. Europe contains many advanced economies, with extremely high wages and generous benefits available to migrants searching for a better life.

However, this makes their tactics to reach this lifestyle even more extreme. The largest path that migrants take into Europe is through the Mediterranean Sea, where migrants use makeshift rafts to attempt to float themselves across the sea, just hoping to be discovered by roving coast guards or somehow reach land. This is extremely dangerous, and thousands of migrants die every year crossing the Mediterranean, but the overall number of crossings is still increasing year over year.

In this committee, delegates will tackle the complex root issues leading to the increase in these crossings, and work to implement solutions, protecting the rights of migrants to seek asylum and keep them safe as they do it.
