Addressing Regional Inequalities in Europe

UNDP | GA

Europe is a continent of contradictions. On one hand, it is home to some of the world’s most advanced economies and longest-established states, but on the other hand, it constantly grapples with conflict, poverty, and geopolitical tensions, much like any other region. The continent is divided into advanced economies in the West and North, such as the Netherlands, France, and Germany, and developing economies in the East and South, like North Macedonia, Albania, and Moldova. Although it may be clear that these differences arose from Europe's historical circumstances, it doesn’t make the issue any less difficult to solve. The European Union is working to close these divides, but its efforts have been limited to the subset of EU countries within Europe, and it has uncovered a host of complex intracountry regional issues as well, with localities falling behind national standards of economic development.

In this committee, delegates will be tasked with bridging this historical gap and working on actionable solutions to reduce regional disparities within the European continent. Delegates will consider the complexities of proposing, planning, and executing economic development programs in light of their limited access to resources, along with the inherent tradeoffs that come with achieving their goals.
