Ramifications of Increased Digital Trade within Europe

UNCTAD | GA

Digital trade is growing faster than ever and quickly outpacing traditional global trade. Digital trade has no official definition, but it largely encompasses the trade of digital items in which no physical objects are shipped or processed. This could be digital licenses to books, movies, or online bookings for hotels and flights, or even more. Underpinning this increase in digital trade is the cross-border flow of data. The internet makes these large data transfers possible and border crossing trivial, despite the differences in legal regimes across jurisdictions.  In this committee, delegates will dive deeper into what digital trade means and how it manifests itself on the European continent. In a part of the world more interconnected than ever, understanding these vital issues is important to understanding how trade regulations need to evolve globally to facilitate this trade safely and securely.

Delegates may consider topics such as data security, data privacy, international copyright, data storage requirements, digital currency, etc., to discuss how digital trade can be facilitated safely, securely, and protect the rights of all parties involved. Delegates will dive deeper into regional trade agreements and discuss how they can be updated to accommodate both increasing digitization and new technologies that have appeared in the past few years.
