Treaty of Versailles
Historic | GA
World War I is one of the deadliest conflicts in European history, and the decisions made in its aftermath ended up creating an even deadlier one. Europe's most powerful nations, though that the war would be short, their entangled web of alliances committed them to a large-scale conflict encompassing the entire continent. Only after nearly 4 years and 20 million people dead was the fighting finally able to stop.
In this committee, delegates will be placed directly after the end of hostilities, and their task will be to negotiate the total peace settlement. Delegations will deal directly with the negotiation of a singular peace treaty combining the elements of the Treaty of Versailles (Germany), Saint-Germain-en-Laye (Austria), Nueilly-sur-Seine (Bulgaria), Trianon (Hungary), and Sèvres (Ottoman Empire), in hopes of creating a unified peace settlement that is acceptable to all parties. Delegates will be forced to navigate complex geopolitical tensions, goals, and conflicting mandates as they seek to rectify the shortcomings of the original treaties, which led to a new, more deadly world conflict. This committee provides delegates with the opportunity to expand their knowledge of European history and to enhance their diplomatic skills as they apply themselves to one of the most difficult and complex issues in world history. All in all, delegates will be responsible for creating only 1 peace treaty, which must be acceptable to most, if not all, of the parties present.
