Broken States, Open Borders: The South Asian Migration and State Corruption Crisis

Cabinet of Myanmar | 6-Way Crisis

Since the military takeover in February 2021, Myanmar has faced prolonged political instability and escalating armed conflict, forcing millions of people to flee their homes. Continued fighting has also driven civilians toward India and Thailand, while weakened institutions and limited humanitarian access by armed efforts have complicated efforts to address displacement.

The Cabinet of Myanmar must confront the consequences of internal conflict while addressing corruption and mounting regional pressure. Delegates should consider how to improve humanitarian aid and reduce exploitation and human trafficking, while also working towards more cooperative relationships with neighboring countries on displacement and border management. It is up to the Cabinet of Myanmar to respond to the growing regional migration crisis while confronting the political instability and institutional failures that continue to undermine the nation’s safety.
