Sinking Homelands: Climate Displacement and the Fight for Refugee Protections in the Indo-Pacific
IOM | GA
As climate change becomes more unpredictable, migrants and refugees in the Indo-Pacific are being hit the hardest. The climate crisis is forcing millions to leave their homes, increasing local tensions and creates a massive humanitarian challenge. While people worldwide are affected by environmental changes, people in fragile or conflict-torn countries in the Indo-Pacific are suffering the most. Because current laws and resources are struggling to keep up with this mass displacement, there is an urgent need for a better, more coordinated plan to protect the safety and rights of those forced to move.
With the struggle to agree on nations’ roles in the acceptance of migrants into host nations, the Indo Pacific’s migrant population turns to the IOM for help! It is up to the IOM to discuss the balance between global obligations and respect of nations’ sovereignty.
