Cabinet of France
6-Way
The European Union accounts for almost 20% of global energy demand, yet the recent energy crises have thrown this market into a period of instability. After the onset of the Russia-Ukraine war in 2022, many European countries were forced to stop relying on Russia for oil and natural gas, driving up the prices for households and businesses as other imports became more expensive. Though electricity and gas prices have seen a decline in 2023 and 2024, they have yet to return to pre-war levels, and new reports indicate they will be rising once again.
These shifts mainly affect households and businesses within the EU, but also have global impact. Europe’s new focus on imported energy has the potential to crowd out the less developed countries, as they are either outbid on global markets or priced out of the market competing for European demand. In this 6-way crisis committee, delegates will work within their countries’ cabinets to work towards solutions for the myriad of issues the energy crisis causes. They will be asked to analyze the current energy market, look for solutions to energy costs, research ethical and sustainable methods of energy, and examine how these solutions and their repercussions ripple through regions outside of the EU. Delegates should be mindful that while they may be only operating within one cabinet, the actions within one country affect every other country around them. Through the conference weekend, the goal should be to obtain a series of solutions that will improve energy in Europe as a whole.
