CABINET OF THE DEMOCRATIC REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO

Stolen Artifacts | 6-Way Joint Crisis

Often when people think of how artifacts were stolen from African countries, they think of these atrocities in the past tense. With recent calls for repatriation of artifacts and cases where there has been the return of valued cultural artifacts and human remains have been carried out, many may think this fight is over and it is a matter of time. However, for many countries that is not the case. The job of the Cabinet of the Democratic Republic of the Congo is to look beyond the performative actions made so far and create a plan of action to reclaim your history in the way best for you and your country. There will be many obstacles and problems in your way as museums will be reluctant to return artifacts, you may lack the infrastructure to house all of what you’ve lost, and often the documentation of artifacts can cause disputes over ownership. And of course, everything has a cost. It will be a hard battle but one of vital importance as you seek to return to your country what was so wrongfully stolen.
