CABINET OF CAPE VERDE

Sand Mining | 2-Way Joint Crisis

Cape Verde is an island nation off the northwest coast of Africa, and its ten islands contain a diverse ecosystem and beautiful landscape consisting of sandy beaches, lush forests, and volcanic rock shorelines. Though renowned for its natural beauty, Cape Verde is almost as significant for its stable and peaceful democracy, frequently ranked the best in all of Africa. However, though not a major participant in the sand mining industry, illegal mining and desertification threaten to lead to erosion and destroy its beaches. The effects of desertification are increased due to the nation’s relatively arid conditions, leading to increased droughts and disruptions to its vital agricultural sector and ecological health. To combat these efforts, the country has begun initiatives focused on reforestation and conservation, though more steps will need to be taken to curb the potential damage that may result upon the landscape of the small African paradise.
