All it takes is one “kissing bug” bite for someone to experience a 10 to 30 year incubation period with Chagas Disease. Also known as American trypanosomiasis, Chagas disease is a typically parasitic disease, endemic to the Americas, which leaves those affected with the infection susceptible to everything from fevers and swollen lymph nodes, and in extreme cases, enlarged colons and heart failure. Management of this disease in Latin America has been a difficult endeavor, with medical supply shortages and lack of medical development funding plaguing the economic context of the region. Chagas has also been dubbed a “silent killer” by some medical communities, because of ignorance of the disease by international political actors. It is your job as the WHO to finally stand up for the 6.6 million living with Chagas today, and affirm the attention that this chronic disease deserves.
All delegates in General Assembly committees are required to write and submit a position paper one week prior to AmeriMUNC VII. This position paper should be a broad overview of your country's formal stance on the topic being discussed in committee. The position paper should also give a description of actions taken by your country to address the committee topic, and how you plan to respond to this topic in committee.
The deadline for all position paper submissions will be Friday, January 25th, 2020 at 11:59 PM EST. Position papers should be submitted via a portal that will become available in early January. General Assembly chairs will take the quality of position papers into account when deciding awards.
